Working Moms vs. Stay-at-Home Moms

Celebrating why the grass is green on all sides of motherhood

We are so tired of the articles inventing issues between stay-at-home-moms and working moms. Being a mom is hard work, regardless of if you spend your days at an office or stay home with the kiddos, am I right? While sometimes it might feel like the grass is greener on the other side, the truth is that there are awesome things about being a working mom and awesome things about staying at home. Motherhood is something to be celebrated, so let’s take a look at the BEST parts of both.

Why it’s awesome being a working mom…

We get to wear nice clothes! Sure, sometimes we show up at the office with spit up on our shoulder, on most days, as long as we skillfully avoid spit-up or sticky hands pre-work, we can wear that beautiful silk top. If we remember to do so in the morning, we even get to accessorize with necklaces and the occasional dangly earring without worrying about the baby yanking on them—at least for a few hours out of every day.  If we are lucky enough to drop off or pick up a kid from school that day – you may be the only one showered, with makeup, and a cute outfit that you get a compliment on.

Sip coffee while it’s still hot and enjoy an actual lunch break! Sure we spend our days zipping from meeting to meeting and sprinting home to see our little ones, but once in awhile we get to savor a hot cup of coffee. On occasion we get to have lunch with coworkers, a fellow working mom, and old friend, or get a quick manicure instead of taking a lunch. These little moments are totally rejuvenating.

Shop online when things are slow! As a little break from our work demands, we can browse Nordstrom’s sale or drool over the latest “it” bag (because we need one for work—no diaper bag here!). While we try not to waste too much time on the internet, it’s nice to be able to zone out without having to worry about what the baby is cramming into her mouth.

Have adult conversations on the regular! Talking to other adults—that is, face-to-face interaction with a human who can speak back—about adult things is refreshing for the soul. While we might not like every single coworker, at least we get to talk about something other than baby BMs and nap times for a few minutes each day.

Experience that incredible “reunion” moment! At the end of a long day away from your kiddos, there is nothing like walking in the door and giving them a big embrace. You know, scooping up your baby at the end of a long work day and seeing their happy face, smelling their sweet scent, snuggling their chubby baby rolls—there’s nothing like that daily reunion. Although, it is hard to leave once the morning makes its way back around.

Why being a stay-at-home mom is the bees knees…

Get to sleep when the baby sleeps sometimes (or at least it is an option)! When we’ve pulled an all-nighter with a teething baby who’s also going through a growth spurt, nap time applies to both baby AND mommy. Of course this doesn’t happen all of the time, but there are days when exhaustion settles in and just closing your eyes for a few minutes can be just the recharge we need. Oh, and we don’t have to get out of our pajamas either!

Take advantage of the gym daycare! There are definitely days when a little Shred415 or Orange Theory are in order. Letting the kids hang out in the gym play area for an hour is a great way to get in a quick workout. While it doesn’t happen nearly enough, it feels great to be active and have an hour of ME time.

Meet up with friends at the park or music classes! When the weather permits, we can get outside to soak up those gorgeous daylight hours at the park, maybe even with the company of another mom friend we love. We can make it to those 10am library storytimes and 3pm swim lessons. Can you say mommy playdate? They are the best!

Witness the big milestones and little moments! The first roll, word, step, discovering how a new toy works, clapping along with a song, smearing food on their faces—we have a good chance of seeing it. It is our job to witness all of those amazing firsts, and capture them on camera, of course. And sometimes we pretend that those “first” steps happened right in front of daddy, and not earlier that day. Hey, it’s the little things.

Not worrying about numbers! Remember the day you realized you would never have homework again?!  No stressing about numbers or job performance is the best feeling in the world. Not to mention that you don’t have to worry about getting to daycare on time, or rushing home to relieve the sitter. You’ve got your routine and there isn’t much that can throw a wrench in it!

There are a million amazing things about being a working mom and being a stay-at-home mom. We all love our kids and want what’s best for them. Let’s be proud of what we do and support one another through this crazy journey of motherhood.
